Since this was a new way to acquire and enjoy a novel, I gave it a try.Ĭlive Barker was born in Liverpool, England in 1952, but he now lives with his partner in Beverly Hills. Why not read it? Better yet, I discovered that I could borrow it on my Kindle from the local library. In searching for those novels, I came across Clive Barker’s The Hellbound Heart, the literary source behind the movie. Fast forward to this year and to my project to read several short novels. Since its tone was body horror rather than suspenseful horror, it wasn’t quite to my taste, but I still enjoyed it. So you’ll understand why, back in 1987, when Hellraiser was released, I felt tempted to see it. Frequent readers will know that I love my horror movies and that I’m constantly searching for new ones to enjoy. The blogger John Rogers famously observed: This is the narrative offered by Ayn Rand, whose mid-twentieth century work still commands a huge audience. She advocates, as the only politics decent people can embrace, an extreme and harsh libertarianism. Those who fail to perceive the moral necessity of unregulated capitalism are evil or stupid, probably both. All social insurance and regulation, from Social Security to the prohibition of pollution, is a step toward Stalinist tyranny. Our adversaries are irredeemably evil. They are animated by malice and greed. They want to enslave us, to make us mere instruments of their unworthy desires. We have nothing to discuss with them. The task of clear-eyed writers is not to engage sympathetically with their ideas, but to expose them for what they are so that the people can unite to defeat them. Oakland: University of California Press, 2019 Review of Mean Girl: Ayn Rand and the Culture of Greed, by Lisa Duggan This summary briefly guides us through the principles of Extreme Ownership. Extreme Ownership is the New York Times bestselling book that explores leadership, accountability, and creating a team culture where everyone works together. Co-author Leif Babin is also a decorated Navy SEAL, who became the primary leadership instructor for graduating officers. Jocko Willink explains that 'War is hell, but war is also a brutal teacher.' As a decorated Navy SEAL officer, Willink's no-nonsense, no-excuses approach, cuts through the BS, and shows us why he is so highly respected. Then, using what they learned from combat situations, the authors teach us that owning problems is the only way to solve them. 'A leader leads by example, not by force.' (Sun Tzu, The Art of War.)Įxtreme Ownership takes us into the most stressful situation: warfare, to introduce us to lessons on leadership. And each of them feels pain every single day. The four murderers will serve their sentences. And I fully believe that all the girls got what they deserved. I found myself feeling great compassion for the girls who committed the murder as well as Shanda who was the victim. They have every right to be angry at the girls who killed their daughter, but absolutely no right to blame it on the fact that some of the girls are lesbians. What also angers me is how Shanda's parents put a lot of the blame on "the girl who persuaded her to enter a lesbian relationship". But when I hear people telling Melinda to "Rot in Hell" I am completely shocked. It was horrible, absolutely horrible what they did to Shanda. It was definitely clear how she became this way. I liked how Jones explained the torment Loveless and Tackett went through in their homes, especially Loveless. This book delves into the minds of the seriously disturbed teenage girl. Knightley's rise in the thespian firmament has been meteoric and this is her best performance to date in a role for which she is perfectly cast. At the heart of this triumph is the delightful 20 year old Keira Knightley as the assured and sharp Elizabeth Bennett, the second of five daughters looking to be married off by an anxious mother. The versatile camera-work, luscious countryside, grand settings, period costumes, and atmospheric music are evidence of a work on which much love has been lavished. First time director Joe Wright has worked with television playwright Deborah Moggach's script and a wonderful collection of mainly British actors to delight us. This quintessentially English film is utterly charming - a very traditional interpretation of Jane Austen's 1813 novel that manages to entertain, amuse and even move. I suppose it comes from my desire to have this short story collection really read like a novel. it was sort of the sunny side of everything, a little bit, but at the same time, you couldn't help seeing in her, in the various people I met, the fact that even though Grozny today is pretty much entirely rebuilt, the traumas and the wreckage of this war is still unhealed inside of so many people.Īuthor Interviews Transcending Hardships By Saving Others In 'Constellation' And my tour guide was this really incredibly kind and welcoming woman named Elena, who was a government bureaucrat who'd sort of been placed in this similar position of, how do you rehabilitate a place like Chechnya in the international imagination.
